Alje spent 25 years editing, writing, and managing at two of Canada’s largest
newspapers —
The Ottawa Citizen and
The Edmonton Journal.
At
The Ottawa Citizen, Alje was a city editor, sports editor,
columnist and senior news editor. He has lectured at Carleton University and
served as a guest editor at the University of Regina’s Journalism School.
Alje began freelancing in 1994. Since then, he’s written speeches for
dozens of federal cabinet ministers and written and edited marketing material,
annual reports, advertisements, and radio and television scripts. For many years,
he was a senior speechwriter for Marc Garneau, Canada’s first astronaut and
former head of the Canadian Space Agency.
Alje is an accomplished bridge player, winning a world-wide championship in 2007.
He maintains that the problem-solving skills required to succeed at bridge
are similar to those required to edit difficult and complex materials.

May worked for 5 1/2 years for an international publisher as an in-house editor and
eventually senior editor, honing her skills in acquisitions,
copy, and production editing for projects in
mathematics, computer sciences, nuclear physics, chaos and bifurcation theory,
chemistry, molecular biology, and business studies. With 7 years of previous
experience as a university research technician and teaching assistant,
May is especially competent to edit technical material related to
microbiology and biochemistry. Since 1999, she has provided freelance
editing/writing services to educational publishers locally and abroad.
May is also an avid (self-taught) graphics designer and likes to create humorous
Flash-movies (álá Jib-Jab-style) for friends and family on special occasions. She
currently holds the distinction of being the oldest snowboarder on the bunny hill.

Karin has worked for over 20 years as an editor in both the arts and sciences.
She began her career in–house with the federal government and became chief editor
in the Health Promotion Branch, Health and Welfare Canada. She left government
to pursue postgraduate work in environmental studies and to start freelance
career. In 1993, Karin began freelance writing/editing and soon was working for
roughly a dozen government departments and agencies, several non-government
organizations, and numerous corporate clients. She has a reputation for getting
the job done, getting it right, and getting it in on time.
With undergraduate degrees in Biology, Geology, and English and a Master of
Environmental Studies degree, Karin is comfortable editing a wide range of
science or arts material for academic, business, and plain language publications.
When not editing, you may find Karin skiing, hiking, or kayaking, or wondering
how the word "neezled"* ever became unpopular.

Leigh is a graduate of Douglas College's challenging Print Futures: Professional
Writing program. His
writing and editing experience extends into medical, scientific,
instructional, academic, private, and corporate realms. He has successfully
applied his skills to technical procedures, H&R documents, in-house health and
safety publications, employee handbooks, job descriptions, Web content, and
curriculum development manuals for educators, to name just a few.
As a self-employed, freelance writer/editor with a home office, Leigh ponders
about how to bring more variety to discussions around the water cooler.

Naomi has worked on words since 1990, when she began a five-year stint as
assistant editor at the venerable Vancouver weekly
The Georgia Straight. It was
there, editing fine writers such as the late James Barber, that she learned to
respect a writer’s style. She went on to pursue a Master’s degree in publishing
and establish a freelance career as a writer and editor.
Since 1997, Naomi has been providing editorial services to a range of clients,
among them regional and national book publishers, self-publishing authors,
academic journals, corporations, and think-tanks.
When not thumbing through her thesaurus, Naomi can be found challenging anyone to
Scrabble (alas, the dog doesn't play), planning a literary vacation, or reading
fiction for fun.

Joan has worked as an editor since 1998 and as a freelance editor since 2002.
While she edits all kinds of material — from cookbooks to online university
course — she tends to specialize in technology and computer science
projects, the natural result of 17 years as a software engineer. She honed
her grammar and language skills during a two-year sabbatical in Japan teaching
English as a second language. Joan is known for her proficiency in writing and
editing, as well as attention to detail on matters of style.
Joan has a Bachelor of Science degree (Computer Science) from the University of
New Brunswick. She has also studied editing, publishing, and indexing under the
Writing & Editing program at Simon Fraser University.

Judith has more than 25 years of experience working as an independent editor,
resulting in a well-deserved reputation for solving editing dilemmas quickly
and accurately without going overboard.
Judith is skilled at copy, stylistic, and substantive editing, and has worked
extensively on both small and large documents from several federal government
organizations, non-government agencies, and corporate clients. One of Judith's
many specialties is to present complex documents in plain language.
Judith has completed thousands of assignments in the last 25 years and never
missed a deadline. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the
University of Saskatchewan, which has been supplemented by professional
development courses. Judith has also prepared professional development courses
as part of her activities with the Editors' Association of Canada.
